US City, Boston Declares March 2 as ‘Burna Boy Day’
Boston, Massachusetts, USA, has declared March 2 to be “Burna Boy Day” in honor of the Grammy-winning singer. The announcement was made in a letter signed by Ruthzee Louijeune, the city councilor, citing Burna Boy’s performances and advocacy works as the basis for the recognition.
The document highlights Burna Boy’s efforts in challenging stereotypes about African artistry by popularizing Afrobeats worldwide through his music. Additionally, the singer was praised for opening doors for aspiring artists and sparking conversations about social justice, equity, and representation.
The letter also acknowledges the significant Nigerian-born population in Massachusetts, emphasizing Boston’s commitment to celebrating culture and diversity through various cultural events and community initiatives. It further states that Burna Boy’s legacy serves as a reminder of the importance of amplifying voices that have long been silenced or overlooked.
March 2, 2024, is officially designated as Burna Boy Day in the City of Boston, following in the footsteps of Atlanta, where the mayor declared November 18 as “Davido Day” in 2023 to honor the contributions of the Afrobeats star to the city.
