Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia Hosts Inaugural Dominican Independence Day Breakfast

Boston City Councilor Julia Mejia is hosting an inaugural Dominican Independence Day Breakfast to celebrate the Dominican community’s growth and influence. The event comes at a time when the Dominican community is recognized as the fastest-growing Latino immigrant population in the state, with Boston City Council reflecting its increasing political influence through the presence of three Dominican members.

The breakfast aims to ‘hold space and amplify the voices and achievements of the Dominican Community,’ as stated by Mejia. It serves as a platform not only to celebrate the nation’s independence but also to recognize the unity and resilience of the community.

According to Mejia, ‘the Dominican community is asserting its influence both politically and economically.’ Drawing inspiration from Boston’s iconic St. Patrick’s Day Breakfast, Mejia aims to establish a similar tradition for the Dominican community, acknowledging and celebrating its culture and political significance.

Boston is home to the second-largest Dominican population in the state, following Lawrence. Massachusetts, with over 175,000 Dominican residents, ranks fourth in the US in terms of Dominican population.

The breakfast is organized in collaboration with fellow Dominican councilors, Enrique Pepén, and Henry Santana, emphasizing the progress and significance of the Dominican community’s contributions.
