Bromyard Community Hospital Closed to Visitors Due to Norovirus Outbreak

Bromyard Community Hospital in Herefordshire has been closed to visitors due to cases of Norovirus. The closure is a preventative measure to curb the spread of diarrhoea and vomiting among patients. Visiting the inpatient ward is only allowed on compassionate grounds and after consulting with the nurse in charge. These restrictions aim to protect both patients and visitors from the highly contagious virus.

Norovirus outbreaks are common in the community, especially during this time of the year. Research has shown that restricting visiting can reduce the risk of transmission within the hospital premises. It is crucial for individuals with symptoms of diarrhoea and/or vomiting to refrain from visiting hospitals until they have been symptom-free for 48 hours. This precaution is particularly important for young children, the elderly, and those who have experienced symptoms in the past 48 hours.

The hospital trust appreciates visitors’ understanding and emphasizes that these measures are in place to safeguard the patients as part of a zero-tolerance approach to healthcare-associated infections.

To prevent the spread of Norovirus, individuals are advised to wash their hands frequently with soap and warm water, especially after using the toilet and before handling food. In NHS facilities, adherence to hand hygiene notices and the use of hand gel upon entering and leaving a ward is crucial. Disinfecting surfaces and objects with a bleach-based household cleaner, disposing of infected waste appropriately, and washing contaminated clothing and linens with hot, soapy water are also recommended.

While most people recover from Norovirus without treatment within 24-72 hours, it is essential to refrain from work, school, or social gatherings until being symptom-free for at least 48 hours.
