Pilates Instructor Shares Experience as Breast Cancer Survivor

Chang Hsiu-yun, a Pilates instructor at the Hong Kong Cancer Fund, recently shared her experience of being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2022. She described feeling shocked and afraid upon receiving the news, with her initial reaction being a sense of disbelief and concern about the treatment process.

As a cancer survivor, Chang emphasized the importance of not feeling overwhelmed by the diagnosis. She highlighted the significance of seeking support and guidance while navigating through the challenging journey of cancer treatment.

Chang’s positive outlook is a testament to her resilience, especially considering the impact her diagnosis had on her family. Her husband and two adult sons were equally affected by the news, and the subsequent months posed significant challenges as Chang underwent treatment.

Detailing her medical procedures, Chang mentioned undergoing a vacuum-assisted biopsy on her left breast, which resulted in a prolonged healing process and physical discomfort. This experience led to her having to cease work as a Pilates instructor and rely on her husband for assistance with various tasks. Additionally, the recovery period was marked by disrupted sleep, further adding to the ordeal.

Following the surgery, Chang underwent 15 sessions of radiation therapy to eradicate the cancerous cells. Although she is currently in recovery, the emotional impact of the initial diagnosis continues to resonate with her, serving as a reminder of the fear and despair she initially experienced.

Chang’s story sheds light on the realities faced by many individuals grappling with cancer diagnoses. Her journey serves as a source of inspiration, highlighting the importance of resilience, emotional support, and access to comprehensive treatment options.

As World Cancer Day approaches on February 4, Chang’s advice and perspective offer valuable insights for those navigating similar challenges. Additionally, her experience underscores the significance of raising awareness and fostering a supportive environment for individuals affected by cancer.
