Jamaica’s Loss to Fiji Concludes Winless Hockey World Cup Campaign

On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, Nickoy Stephenson and Shemar Gordon scored for Jamaica in a match against Fiji at the FIH Men’s Hockey 5s World Cup in Oman. Despite their efforts, Jamaica lost 4-2, concluding their campaign winless at the tournament.

Gordon initially gave Jamaica the lead in the 15th minute, but Fiji quickly equalized through Mock Krristofer. After the half-time break, Stephenson put Jamaica back in front in the 17th minute, only for Krristofer to equalize again. Fiji then scored two more unanswered goals, securing their victory and adding to Jamaica’s disappointing debut at the hockey World Cup.

Prior to this match, Jamaica had faced defeats in all three of their Pool ‘B’ games, including a 13-0 loss to India and a 15-2 defeat to Pakistan. Their subsequent 8-1 loss to the United States further compounded their challenges, ultimately leading to a 16th and final placement at the tournament.

Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago also faced a setback, losing 7-5 to Kenya in the 7th to 8th place playoff, while the USA emerged victorious with a 10-9 win over Nigeria in the 13th to 14th place playoff.
