Sega of America to Lay Off 61 Employees

Sega of America is reportedly set to lay off 61 employees, amounting to more than 10% of its total staff. The layoffs, according to a California WARN notice, will take place on March 8, 2024. The WARN Act legally requires companies to give 60 days notice before a mass layoff, and Sega of America has confirmed plans for two separate layoffs of 49 staff and 12 staff, both effective on March 8.

With roughly 440 staff, a layoff of this nature would theoretically affect around 13% of Sega of America’s workforce. Although the company has not officially announced the layoffs, it has been contacted for a statement.

This news comes amidst a wave of mass layoffs across the video game industry. In January 2024 alone, job losses have already surpassed more than half of 2023’s total. Microsoft, Riot Games, Unity, and Eidos Montreal are among the companies that have recently announced significant staff reductions.

As the industry continues to face these challenges, the impact on employees and the broader gaming community remains a topic of concern.
