Apple has lost another veteran hardware engineering executive to Rivian, as DJ Novotney departs the company after almost 25 years. Novotney, who served as vice president of hardware engineering, has been an integral part of multiple generations of iconic Apple products including the iPod, iPhone, and Apple Watch.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Novotney is set to become the senior vice president of vehicle programs at Rivian, reporting directly to CEO RJ Scaringe. His departure from Apple was marked by a memo in which he expressed gratitude for his time at the company and his excitement for the opportunity to contribute to a new set of products at Rivian.
This move follows another recent departure from Apple to Rivian, with Jonas Reinke, the former head of product, mobility, and auto services at Apple, joining Rivian as a VP of product management. The trend of executives leaving Apple for Rivian indicates the appeal and potential growth opportunities at the electric vehicle company.
Novotney’s impact at Apple extended beyond the consumer products, as he also contributed to Apple’s Project Titan electric car team and played a key role in developing future home devices, including projects in robotics and artificial intelligence.
These departures add to the list of recent exits from Apple, including the appointment of a former Porsche and Apple veteran to assist with the rollout of Rivian’s R2 and R3 EV platform, the departure of a senior executive responsible for iPhone’s multitouch screen and Touch ID, and the exit of Apple’s VP of Finance who is set to take over as Sonos CFO.
As Apple continues to experience shifts in its executive leadership, the industry will be closely watching how these changes may impact the company’s future product development and innovation.
