Eve Online, the notoriously complex spacefaring game, is making its way to the tabletop world with a massive new 4X board game. The renowned miniature masters at Titan Forge are collaborating with CCP Games to bring this ambitious project to life.
In recent years, the tabletop gaming industry has seen an increasing number of successful video game licenses making their mark. The breakout indie hit, Dorfromantik, not only achieved success on Steam but also won the prestigious Spiel des Jahres award in its tabletop interpretation, Dorfromantik: The Board Game.
Now, in 2024, more developers are eager to join the trend of high-profile video game crossovers in the world of board gaming. This includes projects based on indie hits like Dead Cells and the popular franchise, Call of Duty. Iceland’s CCP Games is also stepping into the arena with their crowdfunding campaign for Eve: War for New Eden, in partnership with Titan Forge.
Eve Online is known for its complexity, blending elements of spacefaring economic simulation and social experiment, with a touch of spreadsheets in space. However, beneath its intricate layers, Eve is essentially a competitive 4X game, involving exploration, resource exploitation, empire expansion, and extermination of opposition. This genre has a rich history in both video gaming and tabletop gaming.
For the upcoming board game, up to four players will embody one of Eve’s iconic in-fiction factions – the Amarr Empire, the Caldari State, the Gallente Federation, or the Minmatar Republic. Each faction will commence the game on a tile representing their home star system and will possess a stack of cards featuring 55 different advanced technologies. Players will have the freedom to pursue these technologies in any order they choose, adding an element of subterfuge as the true capabilities of their opponents remain hidden until the first attack is launched.
