The automotive world is abuzz with excitement as Kia prepares for the launch of its latest compact SUV, the Kia Syros, set to make its debut in India on December 19. Positioned as a more premium alternative to the popular Sonet, the Syros aims to redefine the compact SUV segment with a focus on spaciousness and advanced features.
As part of Kia’s expanding lineup, the Syros (codenamed AY) boasts a unique design that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing. Its tallboy, boxy silhouette is designed to maximize interior space, providing a more comfortable experience for passengers. The vehicle features a clamshell bonnet adorned with a sleek 2D Kia logo, flanked by vertically stacked LED headlights and Daytime Running Lamps, creating a modern and striking front fascia.
In terms of exterior styling, the Syros incorporates generous black cladding around the wheel arches and bumpers, enhancing its rugged appeal. The alloy wheels, which could reach up to 17 inches in size for higher trims, add to the vehicle’s sporty look. Teasers have revealed a distinctive break in the window line at the B-pillar, reminiscent of the Skoda Yeti, along with a sharp kink in the rear quarter glass, flush-fitting door handles, and L-shaped high-mounted tail-lights that contribute to its contemporary design.
Stepping inside the Kia Syros, the brand promises a “lounge-like” atmosphere with an innovative seating layout and futuristic features. Kia has emphasized that the rear seat space will surpass that of the Sonet and even the larger Seltos, catering to families and those who prioritize comfort. A standout feature will be the reclining rear seats, a luxury currently exclusive to the Hyundai Venue within this segment.
The infotainment system is expected to feature a 10.25-inch display in the top variants, complemented by a full-digital instrument cluster that enhances the modern feel of the cabin. Teasers have also highlighted a new two-spoke steering wheel equipped with controls for the infotainment system and terrain modes, including options for Mud, Snow/Wet, and Sand. Additional amenities such as front parking sensors, a wireless charger, multiple USB-C ports, a panoramic sunroof, and an Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) suite are anticipated to enhance the overall driving experience.
Under the hood, the Kia Syros will be powered by familiar engine options, including a 1.0-litre turbo-petrol engine that delivers 120 horsepower and 172 Nm of torque, along with a 1.5-litre diesel engine producing 116 horsepower and 250 Nm of torque. Both engines will be available with manual and automatic transmission options. However, the naturally aspirated 1.2-litre petrol engine found in the entry-level Sonet variants will not be included in the Syros lineup, aligning with its more premium positioning.
Pricing for the Kia Syros is expected to be competitive, with estimates suggesting a starting price around Rs 10 lakh, potentially reaching over Rs 15 lakh for top-end variants. This pricing strategy places the Syros above the Sonet, whose turbo-petrol variants are priced between Rs 9.63 lakh and Rs 14.91 lakh (ex-showroom). The Syros may also overlap with certain variants of the Seltos, which could appeal to a broader range of customers seeking a compact SUV with enhanced features and space.
As the launch date approaches, automotive enthusiasts and potential buyers are eagerly anticipating the official unveiling of the Kia Syros, which promises to elevate the compact SUV experience in India with its innovative design, spacious interiors, and advanced technology features.
