2.6 Million Stanley Travel Mugs Recalled Due to Burn Hazard

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a significant recall of approximately 2.6 million Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs due to a serious burn hazard. This recall affects a wide range of consumers who have purchased these popular stainless steel mugs, which are known for their durability and convenience.

According to the CPSC, the issue arises from the lid threads of these mugs, which can shrink when subjected to heat and torque. This defect can cause the lid to detach unexpectedly during use, posing a risk of burns to consumers. The recall was officially issued on December 12, 2024, and it is crucial for anyone who owns these mugs to take immediate action.

The affected products include all Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold throughout the United States. These double-walled mugs come in various colors, such as white, black, and green, and are available in sizes of 12 oz., 16 oz., and 20 oz. Each mug features a polypropylene lid and displays the Stanley logo on both the front and bottom.

Consumers can identify the recalled mugs by checking the product identification numbers located on the bottom of the mugs. The following sizes and corresponding product identification numbers are included in the recall:

  • Switchback: 12 ounces – 20-01437; 16 ounces – 20-01436, 20-02211
  • Trigger Action: 12 ounces – 20-02033, 20-02779, 20-02825; 16 ounces – 20-02030, 20-02745, 20-02957; 20 ounces – 20-02034, 20-02746

In light of this safety concern, Stanley urges all consumers to stop using the affected travel mugs immediately. Those who have purchased the recalled mugs are encouraged to contact Stanley directly to obtain a free replacement lid, which will include shipping at no cost to the consumer.

The CPSC has reported that Stanley has received a total of 91 incidents worldwide related to the lid detachment, with 16 of those incidents occurring in the United States. Alarmingly, there have been 38 burn injuries reported globally, including two in the U.S., with 11 consumers worldwide requiring medical attention as a result of the incidents.

The recalled mugs were sold at various retailers, including Amazon.com, Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Target, both in physical stores and online. They were available for purchase from June 2016 through December 2024, with prices ranging between $20 and $50, depending on the specific model.

Stanley, operating under PMI WW Brands LLC based in Seattle, Washington, has taken steps to address the issue and ensure consumer safety. The mugs were manufactured in China, and the recall number associated with this action is 25-063.

For more information or to initiate a recall claim, consumers can reach out to Stanley’s customer service by calling the toll-free number 866-792-5445 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday.
