Red Deer RCMP Urges Residents to Prepare for Winter Driving with Proper Tire Use

The Red Deer RCMP Traffic Unit has issued an important reminder to local residents regarding the installation and use of winter tires as the colder months approach. Properly equipped vehicles are essential for safe driving on winter roads, and the RCMP emphasizes the significance of using tires that are clearly marked with the mountain and snowflake symbol.

Winter tires are specifically designed to enhance vehicle handling in icy and snowy conditions. It is crucial to ensure that all four tires are of the same size, speed rating, and load index. While tires labeled “M + S” (which stands for mud and snow) or “all-season” tires can provide adequate performance in various weather conditions, they may not always be reliable in severe snow situations.

According to the RCMP, wide high-performance tires, unless they are specifically designed for snow, are not suitable for driving on snow-covered roads. To help residents navigate the winter safely, here are the top four recommendations from the Red Deer RCMP regarding winter tires:

  1. Install Four Winter Tires: For optimal control and stability in icy conditions, it is recommended to install winter tires in sets of four. Transport Canada and the Rubber Association of Canada both advocate for this practice. Mixing different tire types, tread patterns, or sizes can significantly compromise vehicle stability and handling.
  2. Monitor Tire Wear: As tires wear down, their traction on snow diminishes. Tires that are worn close to their tread-wear indicators should not be used on snow-covered roads or in severe winter conditions. Regularly checking tire wear is essential for maintaining safety.
  3. Check Tire Pressure: Proper air pressure is vital for extending tire life, enhancing safety, and reducing fuel consumption. As temperatures drop, tire pressure can decrease, so it is advisable to check tire pressures at least once a month when the tires are cold, preferably after the vehicle has been parked overnight.
  4. Look for the Snowflake Symbol: Tires that bear the mountain and snowflake symbol have been tested and meet specific snow traction performance requirements. These tires are engineered for optimal performance in snowy conditions, making them a reliable choice for winter driving.

In addition to these tire tips, the Red Deer RCMP is also actively engaging with the community to honor and remember Indigenous veterans. As part of their efforts, they hosted a guest speaker for Indigenous Veterans Day, highlighting the contributions of Indigenous individuals in the military.

Furthermore, local authorities are investigating a recent incident involving a wind turbine in east-central Alberta, confirming that there were no injuries reported. This incident remains under scrutiny as officials work to understand the circumstances surrounding it.

As the community reflects on its history, there are also ongoing commemorations for the 187th Central Alberta Battalion, ensuring that the sacrifices and contributions of local heroes are not forgotten.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed about local news and events by subscribing to daily updates from the Red Deer RCMP and other community resources. Keeping abreast of safety tips and local happenings can help ensure a secure and informed winter season for all.
