Billy Zane is set to make a significant appearance at the upcoming Torino Film Festival, where the world premiere of the highly anticipated independent film “Waltzing With Brando” will take place. Directed by Bill Fishman, the film features Zane in the role of the legendary actor Marlon Brando, focusing on a pivotal time when Brando was preparing for his iconic roles in “The Godfather” and “Last Tango in Paris.”
“Waltzing With Brando” draws inspiration from the memoir of Bernard Judge, who was not only Brando’s architect but also an idealistic figure in Los Angeles at the time. The narrative explores the intriguing relationship between Brando and Judge, highlighting how Brando persuaded him to create what would become the world’s first ecologically perfect retreat on the remote and largely uninhabitable island of Tetiaroa in Tahiti.
The film’s production predominantly took place on Tetiaroa, where Brando and Judge collaborated on innovative sustainable architecture and practices. This unique backdrop adds an authentic layer to the film, showcasing Brando’s commitment to environmental consciousness during a time when such ideas were just beginning to take root.
The Torino Film Festival, which runs from November 22 to 30, has chosen “Waltzing With Brando” as its closing film. This year’s festival holds special significance as it also commemorates the centennial of Marlon Brando’s birth. In honor of this milestone, the festival will feature a 24-title retrospective celebrating the groundbreaking career of the two-time Oscar winner, known for his naturalistic acting style and rebellious spirit.
This edition of the Torino Film Festival will be the first under the guidance of new artistic director Giulio Base, who is dedicated to revitalizing the event, particularly in its focus on young directors and independent cinema. Base expressed his excitement about Zane’s involvement, noting that the actor is remarkably channeling the essence of Marlon Brando in his performance. “You won’t believe it: he is possessed by Marlon Brando,” Base shared.
In addition to Zane’s film, the festival will kick off with the international premiere of Ron Howard’s survival thriller “Eden,” which features an impressive cast including Jude Law, Ana de Armas, Vanessa Kirby, and Sydney Sweeney. This marks a significant moment for the film, as it will be making its international festival debut following its earlier launch at the Toronto Film Festival.
The complete lineup for the Torino Film Festival is set to be unveiled on November 7, promising an exciting selection of films that reflect the diverse landscape of contemporary cinema.
As the festival approaches, anticipation builds for both the closing film and the celebration of Brando’s legacy, marking a unique intersection of cinema history and innovative storytelling.
