Generation Z, comprising individuals born from the mid-1990s to the early 2010s, is facing unprecedented levels of depression and behavioral health issues.

Recent statistics reveal a staggering reality: approximately 52% of young adults aged 18 to 24 are experiencing depression, with many requiring clinical assistance. This alarming figure was highlighted at two healthcare conferences attended recently, where experts emphasized the need for immediate action. As an employer and mentor to young adults, these numbers serve as a wake-up call to the broader community.

From the perspective of the real estate sector, particularly in the medical field, the rise in mental health challenges has led to an increased demand for specialized facilities. A recent report from CBRE indicated a notable surge in the development of behavioral health facilities, underscoring a growing recognition of the need for dedicated spaces to address mental health issues. However, despite the increased demand for such facilities, a significant gap remains in the availability of mental health practitioners.

The shortage of mental health professionals, particularly psychiatrists and therapists, exacerbates the crisis, leaving many individuals without the support they desperately need. Research from UT Southwestern’s Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care reveals that a staggering 74.9% of youth with depression do not receive the necessary mental health services. This statistic highlights the urgent need for comprehensive support systems to bridge the gap in mental health care.

General practitioners are stepping up to address this gap by providing initial screenings and referrals, a practice that should become as routine as checking blood pressure during medical visits. Early identification of mental health issues through these screenings is crucial in connecting patients with the appropriate care and resources.

Founded by Susan Miller and Jessica Miller-Essl, MHI aims to bridge the gaps in mental health support, particularly concerning depression and bipolar disorders.

The initiative focuses on creating awareness, providing resources, and fostering a supportive environment for those affected by mental health challenges. By collaborating with various stakeholders, including healthcare providers, employers, and community organizations, MHI seeks to develop comprehensive strategies to enhance mental health care accessibility.
