Stephan Jaeger, a talented golfer from Germany, has carved a unique path in the world of golf that has led him to the prestigious Paris Olympics. His journey from Germany to Tennessee is filled with remarkable achievements and memorable experiences that showcase his dedication to the sport.
Jaeger first made waves in the golfing community during the Korn Ferry Tour event known as the Ellie Mae Classic in 2016. At that event, he stunned the audience by shooting a record-breaking 58, which remains one of the lowest rounds in the history of the tour. Xander Schauffele, who recently clinched victory at the British Open, recalls his surprise at Jaeger’s performance during that tournament. Schauffele, who finished nine shots behind Jaeger with a score of 65, was in awe of Jaeger’s skill and determination.
Before arriving in the United States, Jaeger honed his skills at Golfclub München Eichenried in Germany. His talent caught the attention of his parents, who sought an opportunity for him to attend an American high school with a strong golf program. After considering various options, including prestigious institutions in Florida and California, Jaeger ultimately chose Baylor School in Tennessee, despite having little knowledge of the region.
Reflecting on his decision, Jaeger recounted, “I remember thinking, ‘I know California and Florida, but where the hell is Chattanooga?’” Despite his initial uncertainty, he felt a connection to the school and took a leap of faith, deciding to spend a year in the United States to improve his English and pursue his passion for golf.
Jaeger’s first day in Tennessee was a whirlwind of activity. He arrived just before a high school match at The Honors Course, known as one of the toughest courses in the state. His teammates, including notable golfers Harris English and Keith Mitchell, were both curious and skeptical about the newcomer. English recalled picking Jaeger up the night before the match and taking him to a local fast-food restaurant, where Jaeger was introduced to Southern cuisine for the first time.
On the day of the match, Jaeger faced a steep learning curve. He had not played a practice round and was unfamiliar with the course. His teammates were unsure of his capabilities, especially since he had just received a yardage book and asked whether it was in yards or meters. Mitchell humorously noted, “We all finished at the same time and they put 68 next to his name. Our head coach was about to faint.” Jaeger’s impressive performance that day showcased his talent and determination, earning him respect among his peers.
Jaeger’s journey in the United States continued as he completed his senior year at Baylor School and subsequently played for the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. His dedication to the sport paid off, as he continued to excel in his golfing career. Today, he resides in Tennessee with his wife, Shelby, and their 1-year-old son, Fritz, demonstrating his commitment to both family and golf.
