Can-Am Rugby Tournament Celebrates 50th Anniversary in Saranac Lake

SARANAC LAKE, NY – The highly anticipated Can-Am Rugby tournament, one of the largest rugby events in the United States, is set to return to the scenic Tri-Lakes region this weekend, marking its 50th anniversary. This year’s tournament will take place from July 26 to July 28, 2024, and will feature an exciting lineup of matches across various divisions, with a special expansion into Tupper Lake.

Originally established in 1974, the Can-Am Rugby tournament has become a staple in the rugby community, drawing teams from across the nation. The event was initially scheduled to celebrate its 50th anniversary last year; however, the pandemic led to the cancellation of the tournament in 2020, pushing the celebration to this year.

Cameron Moody, the tournament director, announced that this year’s event will host an impressive 120 teams, exceeding the typical goal of 104 teams. “We’re hoping for the future that we can stay at this number,” Moody expressed. “We’ve brought back the premier division, which has allowed us to add more teams with a higher level of competition. These players usually compete in leagues rather than just tournaments, and we’re optimistic that they will return after experiencing what we offer here.”

The tournament will feature nine divisions, including men’s and women’s club, men’s and women’s social, and the old boys’ divisions, which are segmented into age categories: over 35, over 45, over 55, and over 60. This structure ensures that players of all ages and skill levels can participate and enjoy the sport.

Teams are expected to travel from as far away as California, while the local team, the Mountaineers Rugby Club, will serve as the host. The tournament is not just about competition; it’s also a family-friendly event. Moody noted, “We’re expecting a lot of family members from the Old Breed Marine Corps team. They’re celebrating their 20th anniversary and will honor fallen Marines who used to play rugby with them, bringing in a significant number of people who have never attended before.”

The matches will be played across 15 different fields in Saranac Lake and Lake Placid, showcasing the beautiful landscapes of the region. In Saranac Lake, games will take place at various locations, including Schroeter’s Field, Petrova fields, and the Saranac Lake High School practice field. Meanwhile, in Lake Placid, seven playing surfaces will be utilized at the North Elba Athletic Fields. Last year, the tournament successfully operated on six fields, and this year maintains that level of engagement.

As the tournament approaches, excitement continues to build among players, families, and fans alike. The Can-Am Rugby tournament not only highlights the sport’s competitive nature but also fosters community spirit and camaraderie among participants and spectators. With its rich history and commitment to inclusivity, this event promises to be a memorable celebration of rugby in the stunning backdrop of the Adirondacks.

For those planning to attend, the tournament offers a unique opportunity to witness high-level rugby and engage with a vibrant community of athletes and families. Whether you’re a rugby enthusiast or new to the sport, the Can-Am Rugby tournament is set to deliver an unforgettable weekend filled with thrilling matches and heartfelt connections.
