Leeward Islands Women’s Under 19 Team Narrowly Loses to Guyana in CWI Female Championship

The Leeward Islands Women’s Under 19 cricket team faced a tough battle against Guyana in the Cricket West Indies Rising Stars Female Under 19 Championship, ultimately losing by a narrow margin of two runs. Despite the loss, the Leeward Islands team displayed strong competitiveness and resilience, positioning themselves as strong contenders for the championship title.

In the match, Guyana set a target of 94 runs for five wickets in their allotted overs. The Leeward Islands’ bowling performance was marred by 23 extras, contributing significantly to Guyana’s total score. Key contributions with the bat came from Naomi Barkoye (17 runs), Realanna Grimmond (15 runs), and Denellie Lindee (14 runs). Skipper Jahzara Claxton took two wickets for 26 runs, with spin bowlers Gabrielle Harrylall and Saivani Kambalapalli delivering an economical bowling performance to restrict the run flow.

Despite a shaky start that saw the Leeward Islands losing two wickets in the first over, Skipper Claxton anchored the innings with a composed knock of 52 runs, including two fours and two sixes. Kimberly Anthony was the only other player to reach double figures with 11 runs. In a tense finish, the Leeward Islands needed 11 runs off the last over to secure victory. However, a mix-up between Harrylall and Claxton resulted in a run out, leaving the team two runs short of the target with just two balls remaining.

Looking ahead, the Leeward Islands will face Jamaica in their final match on Thursday as they aim to bounce back from this narrow defeat and finish the championship on a high note.
