Canterbury Medieval Pageant Brings History to Life

Get ready to step back in time as Canterbury gears up for its annual medieval pageant, set to take place on Saturday. The event will feature effigies of Saint Thomas Becket, King Henry II, and Queen Eleanor, bringing to life a significant moment in history.

Saint Thomas Becket, a revered figure, met his tragic fate in Canterbury’s cathedral in 1170 at the hands of four knights who believed they were carrying out the king’s wishes. This year’s pageant, marking the 850th anniversary of Henry’s pilgrimage to Canterbury, will reenact the king’s barefoot march to the saint’s tomb as a gesture of penance for his involvement in Becket’s murder.

The procession will kick off at Westgate Towers, proceed to the Buttermarket, and conclude at the cathedral grounds. An intriguing aspect of the event will be the king’s effigy offering an official apology within the cathedral precincts, adding a solemn touch to the festivities.

Now in its ninth year, the Canterbury Medieval Pageant promises a grand spectacle with knights and monarchs parading through the streets, captivating the audience with its vibrant display of history.

For those looking to immerse themselves further in the medieval experience, the cathedral grounds will host various activities from 09:00 to 21:00, including crown and mitre making and a stone mason carving competition, all free of charge.

Don’t miss out on this unique cultural event that brings Canterbury’s rich history to life. Join in the celebration and witness the grandeur of the past come alive in the heart of the city.
