New Framework for Obesity Diagnosis and Management Introduced by European Association for the Study of Obesity
A new framework for the diagnosis, staging, and management of obesity in adults has been introduced by the European Association for the Study of Obesity. This framework aims to better align with the concept of obesity as a chronic disease characterized by abnormal and excessive body fat accumulation, posing health risks.
Obesity is recognized as a multifactorial, chronic, relapsing, non-communicable disease that can lead to various other health conditions. Despite this acknowledgment, current clinical practices for diagnosing and managing obesity do not fully reflect its status as a chronic disease. Diagnosis often relies solely on body mass index (BMI) cut-off values, neglecting the importance of adipose tissue distribution and function in determining disease severity.
Furthermore, the therapeutic approaches for obesity management predominantly focus on anthropometric measurements rather than a comprehensive clinical assessment of the individual. This approach contrasts with the management of other chronic diseases, where treatment guidelines are well-defined, treatment targets are established, and treatment intensity is adjusted based on progress towards these targets.
To address this disparity and promote the development of clinical guidelines for obesity in line with those for other chronic diseases, the European Association for the Study of Obesity initiated a consensus process. The goal was to propose a new framework that emphasizes a more holistic approach to diagnosing, staging, and managing obesity in adults.
The new framework aims to enhance the understanding and treatment of obesity by incorporating considerations beyond BMI measurements. By recognizing the role of adipose tissue distribution and function in disease severity, the framework seeks to provide more tailored and effective management strategies for individuals with obesity.
This initiative by the European Association for the Study of Obesity underscores the importance of reevaluating current practices in obesity diagnosis and management. By adopting a comprehensive framework that aligns with the chronic nature of obesity, healthcare professionals can better address the complexities of this prevalent health issue and improve patient outcomes.
