Bielsa will miss the crucial group stage match against the US due to his delayed appearances in the first two games. Conmebol imposed a $15,000 fine on Uruguay’s soccer association for the violations.
The Copa América regulations stipulate that teams must return to the pitch promptly after halftime, with warnings issued for initial infractions. Uruguay faced penalties after being late for the second half in their victories over Panama and Bolivia. Bielsa’s team was 90 seconds late in the match against Bolivia.
Bielsa’s suspension mirrors the actions taken against three other Argentinian coaches, including Lionel Scaloni, Ricardo Gareca, and Fernando Batista, for similar delays during the ongoing tournament in the US.
Peru coach Jorge Fossati highlighted the logistical challenges teams face, suggesting the need for adjustments in timing protocols to accommodate varying distances between the pitch and locker rooms in different stadiums.
Despite the off-field distractions, Uruguay is aiming for a record 16th Copa América title. The team has displayed dominant performances in the opening matches, securing the top spot in Group C with six points.
