Major Changes Coming to Germany in July 2024

In July 2024, significant changes are set to impact consumers across Germany. From rising pensions to new regulations on disposable bottles and mandatory black boxes for cars, here’s an overview of what to expect:

Rising Pensions

Starting July 1, 21 million pensioners will see a 4.57% increase in their pensions. This marks the first time that pensions in both East and West Germany will rise equally, following the 2023 pension adjustment that equalized pension values.

Mandatory Cap for Disposable Bottles

As of July 1, tethered caps on disposable plastic bottles will become mandatory. These caps, which are already present on most PET bottles, aim to reduce plastic waste caused by loose closures. The regulation will also apply to milk packaging, in line with EU guidelines.

Black Box Obligation for Cars

From July 2024, all newly registered vehicles must be equipped with a black box that records data for accident analysis. This measure is intended to enhance road safety by providing crucial information in the event of accidents. Additionally, newly registered vehicles will be required to have various assistance systems such as lane departure warning and emergency brake assist.

First Cannabis Social Clubs

Starting July 1, the cultivation and distribution of cannabis within designated social clubs will be legalized. These clubs must operate on a non-commercial basis and adhere to strict regulations governing the handling of the drug.

Extended Breast Cancer Screening

In July, the age limit for free breast cancer screening under statutory health insurance will be raised from 69 to 75. This extension aims to improve early detection and treatment for individuals within this age group.
