Capcom Revives Monster Hunter Stories Due to 3DS eShop Closure

Capcom: 3DS eShop Closing Influences Return of Monster Hunter Stories

Recently, Japanese gaming publication Famitsu had the opportunity to speak with Monster Hunter Stories producer Yoshihiro Akira regarding the decision to revive the original Monster Hunter Stories video game. One of the key reasons cited for this decision was the closure of the Nintendo 3DS eShop by Nintendo. This closure made it challenging for fans to experience the series in its entirety.

According to Akira, the global support received from players who enjoyed Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, released in 2021, played a significant role in the decision. The cessation of the 3DS online store service further complicated the ability for players to engage with the series in chronological order, prompting the decision to bring it to current gaming platforms.

To facilitate a seamless gaming experience, efforts were made to fully voice the game in both English and Japanese. Additionally, a ‘Museum’ feature was introduced, showcasing production materials and BGM tracks to enhance player immersion in the game’s world.

Porting an older game to modern platforms involves a meticulous process that demands time and attention to detail. The development process commenced with a thorough examination of the source code. Adapting the user interface posed a significant challenge due to the differences in screen layouts between the 3DS and smartphone versions.

Fortunately, Monster Hunter Stories 2: Wings of Ruin, playable on platforms like the Nintendo Switch, PS4, and Steam, provided a foundation for this reconstruction. The ‘Museum’ feature, which included artwork from the game’s development process, was seamlessly integrated, thanks to the well-maintained archives from that period.

As Capcom navigates the evolving gaming landscape, the decision to revive Monster Hunter Stories underscores the company’s commitment to honoring its gaming legacy and ensuring that players can continue to enjoy their favorite titles across various platforms.
