June is the month to celebrate the rich and diverse wines of Portugal. Local wine merchants, including Cellar Door Wines, are joining forces with 14 independent wine retailers to shine a spotlight on Portugal’s exceptional wines. Known for its abundance of grape varieties and varied terroirs, Portugal boasts over 250 indigenous grape varieties, making it the European country with the highest diversity of grapes per square kilometer.
Despite its size, Portugal is home to 14 unique wine regions, each producing distinct wines that reflect the country’s rich winemaking tradition. Wine plays a significant role in Portuguese culture, bringing friends and family together during meals and enhancing the dining experience.
One of the standout regions is Dao, nestled amidst the mountains of Caramulo, Bucaco, Nave, and Etrela. Shielded from cold winds and summer rains, the vineyards in Dao have been passed down through generations within the same families. Among the recommended wines from this region is the Adega de Penalva Dao Tinto 2017, available at Cellar Door Wines for £10.95.
The Adega Cooperativa de Penalva do Castelo, founded in 1960, has since grown to include about 1,000 members and processes grapes from over 1200 hectares of vineyards annually. Utilizing modern winemaking technology, the winery has become a prominent name in Dao wines.
The Adega de Penalva Dao Tinto 2017 is a blend of three indigenous grape varieties: Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz, and Jaen. This mature wine offers a full-bodied experience with smooth tannins and flavors of black fruits, showcasing the quality and value of Portuguese wines.
