Bugatti, the renowned luxury car manufacturer, has taken a groundbreaking step into the world of electric vehicles with the launch of its latest creation, the Tourbillon. The unveiling of this all-new hypercar took place at a star-studded world premiere event in Molsheim, France, signaling a significant departure from Bugatti’s traditional W16 engine.
Collaborating with Mate Rimac, the mastermind behind the all-electric Nevera, Bugatti has electrified the Tourbillon, setting a new standard in the industry. The Tourbillon retains the essence of a Bugatti while embracing electrification, showcasing a blend of innovation and tradition.
Contrary to expectations, Bugatti’s Tourbillon has not gone fully electric like some anticipated. Instead, the hypercar follows a hybrid approach similar to models like the Ferrari SF90 Stradale and the McLaren Artura, albeit with Bugatti’s distinctive touch.
The Tourbillon features an all-new 8.3-liter naturally aspirated V16 engine developed in collaboration with Cosworth, a renowned British race engine manufacturer. Complementing this powerhouse are a front e-axle with two electric motors and an additional rear motor, collectively generating an impressive 1,800 hp. This hybrid setup surpasses the output of the iconic Bugatti Veyron, showcasing the brand’s commitment to performance and innovation.
The electric powertrain of the Tourbillon offers immediate torque and agility, enhanced by a 25kWh battery that provides a practical all-electric range of over 37 miles. Mate Rimac, the visionary behind the Tourbillon’s electrification, emphasized the importance of electric power in the future of transportation, while acknowledging the enduring appeal of combustion engines in certain contexts.
During a pre-launch meeting in Zagreb, Rimac expressed his belief in the inevitable shift towards electric mobility, highlighting the unique opportunities presented by electric powertrains. He emphasized the ability of electric vehicles to deliver unparalleled performance and driving experiences, as demonstrated by the groundbreaking Nevera.
As the automotive industry continues to evolve, Bugatti’s foray into electrification with the Tourbillon signifies a new chapter in the brand’s storied history. By combining cutting-edge technology with a legacy of excellence, Bugatti is poised to redefine the boundaries of hypercar innovation.
