West Point Thoroughbreds Prepares for 2024 Thoroughbred Makeover with Graded Stakes Winners
West Point Thoroughbreds is gearing up for the 2024 Thoroughbred Makeover with not one, but two graded stakes winners – Cavalry Charge and Decorated Invader. The trainers for these magnificent horses, Erin Knehr and Mary Termer, will be chronicling their journey in a joint blog entry each month.
Erin Knehr reflects on the challenges and triumphs of the past month with Cavalry Charge, affectionately known as Calvin. Battling through rain and wet fields, they faced hurdles like hives and skin issues, requiring intensive training on medicated baths. Calvin exhibited unusual behavior, struggling with canter departures and lead changes, prompting a vet check and chiropractic care. Despite these setbacks, there is a sense of optimism as improvements in his canter departures and overall relaxation are noted.
Erin emphasizes the importance of patience and understanding in retraining Thoroughbreds, acknowledging the inevitable setbacks and progress that come with the process. While the road to the Thoroughbred Makeover may not be without challenges, the dedication and bond between Calvin and Erin shine through.
