Approximately 40 minutes after takeoff, while cruising at 32,000 feet, the aircraft encountered a Dutch roll, a complex aircraft motion involving a combination of yaw and roll movements.
The flight crew managed to regain control of the aircraft, ultimately landing safely at Oakland Airport’s runway 30, 55 minutes after the incident occurred. Upon inspection after landing, damage to the power control unit (PCU) responsible for controlling the rudder was discovered.
Due to the seriousness of the incident, the aircraft remained grounded in Oakland until June 6, 2024. Subsequently, it was flown to Paine Field in Washington for further investigation by Boeing. The aircraft has since been undergoing maintenance at Aviation Technical Services, one of Southwest’s maintenance vendors.
