Wrexham AFC Documentary ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ Nominated for TV Critics Award

Wrexham AFC continues to bask in the limelight with yet another feather in its cap. The renowned soccer club, also known as the Red Dragons, has ventured into the television realm with the captivating documentary, ‘Welcome to Wrexham.’ The brainchild of Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, the series has now clinched a prestigious nomination at the 2024 TV Critics Award.

The exciting news was unveiled through the official social media channels of the documentary. Wrexham FX, in collaboration with FX Network and Rob McElhenney, took to Instagram to share the thrilling announcement. A photo capturing Reynolds’ disbelief while looking at McElhenney was accompanied by the caption, ‘Can you believe it?! Welcome to Wrexham has received a 2024 TV Critics Award Nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Reality.’

Among its contenders, ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ will be up against tough competition from shows like Peacock’s ‘The Traitors’ and Bravo’s ‘Top Chef.’ Notably, CBS’s ‘The Amazing Race,’ a previous winner in 2011 and 2022, is also back in the race for the coveted award. Additionally, HBO Max’s lineup boasts three contenders – ‘Conan O’Brien Must Go,’ ‘Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,’ and ‘We’re Here.’

The documentary has secured a nomination in the Outstanding Achievement in Reality category, while missing out on other genres such as Comedy, Drama, Movies, News, and Information. Despite not making the cut in various categories, this recognition marks a significant achievement for the Welsh club’s documentary, which has already bagged five Emmy Awards in the past.

However, the TV Critics Award is not the only accolade on the horizon for ‘Welcome to Wrexham.’ The team behind the documentary, led by Reynolds and McElhenney, is eagerly anticipating the outcome of the NTA Awards. Recently, the series made the shortlist in the Factual Entertainment genre at the 2024 National Television Awards, competing against a diverse range of nominees including sports documentaries like ‘Brawn: The Impossible Formula 1 Story,’ Amazon Prime’s ‘Married to the Game,’ ’99’ – Manchester United’s treble-winning coverage series, and ‘Match of the Day’ hosted by Gary Lineker.
