The 2024 Cannes Film Festival has come to a close, marking the end of another spectacular cinematic event. As the famous red carpet is rolled up and the screenings on the beach are wrapped, attendees are left with memories of a festival filled with films, discussions, and connections.
One notable observation this year was the increased use of cell phones during film screenings, despite the strict prohibition against it in Cannes. However, a simple request to stop usually led to an apology and compliance, showing the respect for the film-viewing experience.
Among the highlights of the festival was a panel hosted by Chaz Ebert at the Roger Ebert Conference Center, focusing on ‘Purpose Driven Filmmaking: Empathy and the Movies’. Joined by industry experts such as Jacqueline Coley, Eric Pierson, Darrien Gipson, and Robert Daniels, the panel explored the importance of empathy in filmmaking.
Attendees of the panel were treated to a copy of Chaz Ebert’s latest book, ‘It’s time to give a FECK: Elevating Humanity through Forgiveness, Empathy, Compassion and Kindness’, showcasing her commitment to spreading positivity and understanding through her work.
Another highlight of the festival was the presentation of the Angieneux lens company award to accomplished cinematographer Santosh Sivan. This prestigious award has previously been won by industry legends such as Vilmos Zsigmond, Roger Deakins, and Ed Lachmann, further solidifying Sivan’s place among the greats.
Aside from the film screenings and industry events, the Cannes Film Festival also provided a platform for attendees to reconnect with old friends and colleagues. Chaz Ebert had the opportunity to catch up with familiar faces like Pablo Villa, a Far-Flung Correspondent from Brazil, and Joshua Lee, a former Ebert Fellow from Hawaii, discussing their experiences and projects in the film industry.
Notable guests at the festival included the Guest family, comprised of actors Nick and Pamela Guest and their daughter Elizabeth. Elizabeth, known for her web series ‘Guest Appearances’, has transitioned her characters into a feature film that recently completed production, sparking excitement and anticipation for its future screenings.
As the Cannes Film Festival wraps up for 2024, attendees bid farewell to another year of cinematic celebration. With the promise of more films, discussions, and connections in the future, the festival looks forward to welcoming back attendees for another unforgettable experience on the Croisette in 2025.
