The Impact of Cancer on Women’s Sexuality and Relationships

Cancer can have profound effects on a woman’s life, impacting not only her physical health but also her sexuality, self-image, and relationships. Three cancer survivors have bravely shared their struggles to shed light on the challenges faced by many women battling this disease.

When Sarah received a Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis in 2020, she never imagined the toll it would take on her body and personal life. A young mother who had recently given birth, Sarah found herself facing chemotherapy, lumpectomy, and radiation. Tragically, by September 2021, her cancer had progressed to Stage 4, marking a devastating turn in her journey.

Following her treatment, Sarah discovered that she had entered early menopause at just 37 years old. The physical symptoms were overwhelming, with hot flushes and vaginal dryness causing discomfort and pain, especially during intimate moments. These changes not only affected Sarah’s physical well-being but also strained her marriage.

Struggling to cope with the challenges of cancer treatment and its aftermath, Sarah found herself at odds with her husband. Communication breakdowns and unmet needs led to mounting tension in their relationship, leaving Sarah questioning the purpose of her fight against cancer.

Sexuality is a significant but often overlooked aspect of cancer survivorship, according to clinical psychologist Assistant Professor Irene Teo. She emphasizes that the impact of cancer extends beyond the physical realm, affecting patients’ self-confidence, self-esteem, and trust in their bodies. The abrupt changes brought on by cancer treatments can disrupt a woman’s sense of identity and femininity.

Assistant Professor Teo highlights the global issue of under-addressed sexual concerns among cancer survivors, pointing out that one in six women with a history of breast or gynaecological cancer experience sexual dissatisfaction. This underscores the need for greater awareness and support for women navigating the complex emotional and physical challenges of cancer.

The struggles faced by Sarah and countless other cancer warriors serve as a reminder of the multifaceted impact of this disease. Beyond the medical treatments, cancer can profoundly alter a woman’s sense of self, her relationships, and her outlook on life. By sharing their stories, survivors like Sarah hope to spark conversations and foster understanding about the holistic effects of cancer on women’s lives.
