Nicholas Galitzine, known for his role in ‘Idea of You,’ is set to take on the iconic character of He-Man in the much-anticipated ‘Masters of the Universe’ film adaptation. The long-awaited movie, directed by Travis Knight and produced by Amazon MGM Studios and Mattel, is scheduled for release in theaters on June 5, 2026.
After a tumultuous journey spanning over two decades, ‘Masters of the Universe’ has faced various setbacks and changes in production. Originally in development with Warner Bros. and Sony, the project later found its home at Netflix before being canceled in 2023 due to budget issues. Several directors have been attached to the film over the years, with the likes of John Stevenson, Jon M. Chu, McG, and Aaron and Adam Nee all being involved in different phases of the project.
Prior to Galitzine’s casting, ‘West Side Story’ actor Kyle Allen was in talks to portray He-Man, but details of why the negotiations fell through remain unclear. The screenplay for the film, based on the popular 1982 action figure, is being penned by Chris Butler following earlier contributions from David Callaham and the Nee brothers. Plot specifics are being kept under wraps, but the story is expected to revolve around Prince Adam’s transformation into the heroic He-Man as he battles the villainous Skeletor to save his planet.
‘Masters of the Universe’ will be brought to life by producers Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch from Escape Artists, and Robbie Brenner from Mattel Films. The project is part of Mattel Films’ ambitious slate of live-action films, which includes unique titles like ‘Barney’ starring Daniel Kaluuya, ‘Bob the Builder’ featuring Jennifer Lopez and Anthony Ramos, ‘Uno’ led by rapper Lil Yachty, and ‘Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots’ with Vin Diesel.
