The Temple Bar, a beloved establishment in Detroit’s Cass Corridor, has been forced to close indefinitely due to structural damage. The incident occurred on Friday morning when a section of the building collapsed, causing debris to fall onto the sidewalk. The collapse also resulted in damage to the overhang above the bar’s entrance.

According to a bar employee, the wall and roof collapsed suddenly around 10 a.m., with no apparent cause for the incident. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries as a result of the collapse. Access to the building was restricted with caution tape as a safety measure following the incident.

The owner of the LGBTQ+ dive bar was unavailable for comment at the time of the incident. Temple Bar, known for its DJ nights, had plans to host a party on Friday evening in conjunction with the Movement Music Festival taking place over the weekend. The event was intended as a fundraiser for the Underground Music Academy and was set to feature performances by popular artists such as Shigeto, Beewack, DJ Caro, and Kandylion. It remains uncertain whether the event will be rescheduled.

Established in 1927 by the current owner’s father, Temple Bar has been a staple in the community for nearly a century. Situated in an area of Detroit experiencing rapid development, the bar had recently undergone renovations, including a fresh coat of red paint on its facade.

As the community mourns the temporary closure of Temple Bar, the incident serves as a reminder of the fragility of historic structures in the face of unforeseen events. The future of the establishment and its iconic DJ nights remains uncertain as repairs are underway to address the structural damage.
