Meta has officially restored Chromecasting functionality to its Meta Quest headsets after removing the feature in December, citing stability and performance issues. The decision to reinstate the feature comes after a public backlash from many users.
Mark Rabkin, Meta’s VP of VR, mentioned that the feature was not officially supported by Google, but did not provide further explanation. Despite Meta’s official documentation still stating that Chromecast isn’t fully supported, many users were unhappy with the change, prompting Meta to bring back the popular feature.
VR headsets like the Meta Quest 3 are powered by Android and can support the Google Cast protocol, allowing users to cast content to Chromecast and Google TV devices. However, Meta Community Manager Ryanality suggests casting from the headset to a smartphone or PC first, and then mirroring the display to a Chromecast, as the most reliable way to cast. Nevertheless, many users have reported additional latency and performance issues with this method.
Despite the challenges, the restoration of Chromecasting functionality is a welcome move for Meta Quest gamers, enabling them to once again cast to a Chromecast or other Google Cast device directly from their Meta Quest headset.
For those looking to enhance their VR experience, the Meta Quest 3 offers a standalone VR experience, providing access to a wide range of games and immersive gameplay.
