China has unveiled its ambitious plans for a lunar base, showcasing a video of the concept that includes intriguing CGI of a NASA space shuttle taking off from the moon’s surface. The China National Space Administration (CNSA) presented the video as part of the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) project, a collaboration between China and Russia announced in 2021.
The video, revealed during China’s annual space day celebrations, outlines a vision for a lunar outpost to be developed over the next few decades. The ILRS initiative aims to attract international partners, with countries like Russia, Venezuela, Pakistan, Azerbaijan, Belarus, and others already on board.
Planned missions include surface sample returns, lander and rover operations, and orbital satellites, aligning with upcoming Chang’e-6 and 7 missions scheduled for launch in the coming years. By 2028, these missions will lay the foundation for the ILRS, which will expand to include essential infrastructure like communications and power generation.
The lunar base is envisioned as a scientific experimental hub for interdisciplinary research on lunar exploration and utilization. It is designed for long-term independent operation on the moon’s surface or in lunar orbit, offering a platform for diverse research activities.
China’s lunar base plans signify a significant step in space exploration, showcasing the country’s commitment to advancing lunar research and establishing a sustainable presence beyond Earth.
