A recent report has revealed alarming information about a scraping service that allows access to the message history of over 600 million Discord users for a mere $5. This service, known as Spy Pet, is actively collecting data from Discord servers, including messages, activities, and even voice channel interactions.
According to the investigation by the 404 Media team, Spy Pet has amassed a database of more than 3 billion messages by monitoring over 14,000 servers and 600 million users. Considering Discord’s reported 614 million registered users as of January 2024, it suggests that a significant portion of the platform’s user base is under surveillance.
Upon payment, Spy Pet customers receive credits that allow them to access information such as individual user profiles, connected accounts, recent messages, and activity within specific voice channels. However, the service appears to lack access to users’ private messages and only scrapes content from public channels within Discord servers.
The creator of Spy Pet described Discord as a prime target for scraping due to the platform’s efforts to combat such activities. This revelation serves as a stark reminder to Discord users that their activities on the platform may not be as private as they think, with potentially sensitive information being available for purchase at a price lower than a fast-food meal.
As concerns grow over data privacy and security on online platforms, it is essential for users to remain vigilant about the information they share and the potential risks associated with third-party data collection services.
