As tensions escalate between Israel and Iran, an Iranian volleyball player, Mobina Rostami, made headlines after expressing support for Israel on social media, only to mysteriously disappear thereafter.
Rostami took to Instagram to voice her disapproval of Iran’s attack on Israel, stating that she felt ‘ashamed’ of the actions taken by the Iranian authorities. She further emphasized that the people in Iran harbor love for Israel and harbor disdain for the Islamic Republic.
Following her bold statement, Rostami’s social media accounts were abruptly shut down, and reports indicate that she has been arrested by Iranian authorities. Concerns for her well-being have been raised as her whereabouts remain unknown.
Friends of Rostami expressed worry over the situation, with one social media user threatening to ‘shove her in a bag.’ The incident underscores the risks faced by individuals in Iran who dare to speak out against the regime.
In a show of solidarity with Rostami, other prominent Iranian athletes, including former national soccer team star Ali Karimi, have also come forward in support of Israel. Karimi, known as the ‘Asian Maradona,’ posted a message on social media featuring hands clasped with both the Israeli flag and the pre-revolution Iranian flag, accompanied by the caption ‘We are Iran, not the Islamic Republic.’
Notably, Karimi has a history of challenging the Iranian regime, having previously faced repercussions for his outspoken views. In 2022, his home was confiscated after he called for political change in Iran amidst civil unrest.
The public declarations of support for Israel by Rostami and Karimi signal a growing dissent within Iran’s sports community and reflect the complex political landscape in the region amid escalating tensions between Israel and Iran.
