A total solar eclipse is set to cross North America today, offering a spectacular celestial event for astronomy enthusiasts. The eclipse will be visible in parts of 15 U.S. states, with maps showing the path of totality, peak times, and the extent of visibility across the country.
The total eclipse is expected to make its first appearance along Mexico’s Pacific Coast at approximately 11:07 a.m. PDT before traversing a wide swath of the U.S. from Texas to Maine and extending into Canada. An estimated 31.6 million people reside in the path of totality, where the moon will completely obscure the sun, while an additional 150 million individuals live within 200 miles of the path.
The eclipse’s path of totality, ranging between 108 and 122 miles wide, encompasses portions of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri, Illinois, Kentucky, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, and small sections of Tennessee and Michigan. The eclipse will also be visible in several major cities, including San Antonio, Austin, Waco, Dallas, Little Rock, Indianapolis, Dayton, Cleveland, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse, and Burlington, among others.
As the eclipse unfolds, astronomy enthusiasts and curious onlookers are encouraged to take advantage of this rare opportunity, provided that weather conditions permit. The event is expected to commence over the Pacific Ocean, culminating in Canada’s southern Ontario before exiting continental North America.
