Subaru has issued an urgent recall of 118,723 SUVs and sedans in the United States due to an issue that could prevent air bags from deploying in a crash, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on Wednesday.
The recall specifically affects certain Outback and Legacy models manufactured between 2020 and 2022. The NHTSA stated that ‘A capacitor in the sensors for the Occupant Detection System (ODS) may crack and short circuit, which can prevent the front passenger airbag from deploying in a crash.’
To address the issue, dealers will replace the ODS sensors on the front passenger seat at no cost to the owners.
This recall comes shortly after Chrysler and Dodge were also compelled to issue similar recall orders in the US due to a comparable airbag inflator issue, according to the NHTSA.
Subaru emphasized its commitment to safety in its recent vehicle recall statement, saying, ‘Safety has been, and always will be, the driving force within every Subaru – from engineering to real-world results.’
The company also provided a tool for drivers to check if their vehicle is affected and advised that occupants should refrain from using the front-passenger seat until the repair is performed.
