Acupuncture, a traditional Chinese medicine practice involving the insertion of needles into specific points on the body, has been gaining attention for its potential to help prevent anxiety. While the idea of needles may seem intimidating, acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat various illnesses and alleviate pain.
According to licensed acupuncturist Ashley Flores, the practice of acupuncture can effectively ease anxiety by regulating the nervous system and bringing the autonomic nervous system back into balance. This helps shift the body into a more relaxed state, reducing the dominance of the sympathetic system.
Elizabeth Trattner, a board-certified doctor of Chinese and integrative medicine, explains that acupuncture works by restoring the body’s balance of energy, known as ‘qi,’ which flows along specific pathways. When this energy is blocked or unbalanced, it can lead to illness, and acupuncture aims to restore homeostasis and promote healing.
Specific acupoints targeted for anxiety treatment include the areas between the eyebrows, insides of the wrists, feet, breastbone, and ears. By targeting these points, acupuncture aims to address bodily and mental symptoms associated with anxiety.
While the efficacy of acupuncture for anxiety is supported by anecdotal and empirical evidence, it is important to consult with a qualified acupuncturist or healthcare professional before pursuing this treatment. As interest in alternative and holistic approaches to mental health continues to grow, acupuncture’s potential role in anxiety prevention is an area of ongoing research and discussion.
