An 83-year-old doctor and triathlete has shared his four key diet principles that he believes have helped him live a long, healthy life. Dr. Joseph Maroon, a neurosurgeon at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, transformed his health in his 40s and has since competed in numerous triathlons.
Maroon’s journey to better health began when he was 40 years old and found himself out of shape, living on fast food, and not exercising. Following the death of his father and experiencing rock bottom in terms of physical and mental health, a friend’s suggestion to try running became the catalyst for his gradual lifestyle changes. He took up more exercise and improved his diet, leading to significant improvements in his overall well-being.
By the age of 53, Maroon had signed up for his first Ironman Triathlon and has completed a total of eight to date. In 2022, he achieved second place in his age category for the National Senior Games triathlon, showcasing the remarkable transformation in his health and fitness.
Sharing his diet principles, Maroon emphasizes the importance of following a Mediterranean-style diet. This eating pattern, which centers around healthy choices and is predominantly plant-based, includes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, and healthy fats such as olive oil. Occasional consumption of fatty fish and red meat is also part of this diet, which has been associated with a lower risk of heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer’s disease.
Additionally, Maroon advocates for avoiding ultra-processed foods, which are manufactured using complex techniques and often contain additives like salts, sugars, and saturated fats. These foods, categorized as ultra-processed based on the NOVA scale, are typically recognizable by their ingredients and include items like protein bars and hot dogs.
