Light therapy, provided by SAD lamps, works by mimicking outside light, specifically bright white light measured in luxes, to manage SAD symptoms.

Hoffmann recommends sitting near a SAD lamp for 20 to 90 minutes, five to seven days a week, particularly in the morning. She emphasizes the importance of a high-quality light box, which should provide light at 10,000 lux when placed 12 inches or more from the eyes or face, and have a UV filter to avoid the risk of retinal damage. A therapy lamp that doesn’t meet the 10,000 lux requirement may necessitate longer exposure to feel the effects.

These lamps have shown positive effects, as evidenced by a personal account of reduced anxiety, sadness, and increased motivation after using a SAD lamp. When considering purchasing a SAD lamp, it’s crucial to pay attention to its features to ensure its effectiveness.
