7000 Pounds of Raw Beef Recalled Due to E. coli Contamination

Nearly 7,000 pounds of raw beef are being recalled due to potential E. coli contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service announced. The recall affects items shipped to Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan from Valley Meats, LLC. The USDA stated that there have been no confirmed reports of E. coli-related reactions due to these products.

The issue was brought to light when the establishment notified FSIS that samples of ground beef products submitted to a third-party laboratory for microbiological analysis tested positive for E. coli O157:H7, as per a USDA news release on Dec. 31. The raw beef products with potential contamination were produced on Dec. 22.

The specific products being recalled include various packages of ground beef patties with different product codes, run numbers, date codes, use-by dates, and timestamps. These items were shipped to distributor locations for further distribution to restaurants and other institutional users. Recalled items also have “EST. 5712” inside the USDA mark of inspection on their packaging.

The USDA urges restaurants and institutions not to serve these products, and they should be discarded or returned to the place of purchase. Additionally, all consumers are reminded to safely prepare their raw beef products and to ensure that they are not part of the recalled items.
