5 Simple Lifestyle Tweaks to Stimulate the Brain and Improve Memory

A neuroscientist has shared five simple lifestyle tweaks to stimulate the brain and improve memory. These tips include getting eight to 10 hours of sleep a night, practicing mindfulness, engaging in aerobic exercise, consuming a balanced diet, and staying socially active.

Brain health is often overlooked but is critical for overall well-being. Protecting brain health may reduce the risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease and dementia, conditions that are on the rise, with an estimated 6.7 million Americans aged 65 and older affected by Alzheimer’s disease in 2023.

Neuroscientist and mental wellness coach Rachelle Summers emphasizes the importance of adequate sleep, recommending between eight to 10 hours per night. She highlights that long-term memories are consolidated during sleep, aligning with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of at least seven hours of sleep for adults.

In addition to sleep, Summers underscores the significance of aerobic exercise, which has been shown to enhance memory in both young and old adults. Aerobic activities such as walking, running, or swimming increase heart rate and oxygen flow, supporting brain function by improving blood circulation.

Mindfulness, another lifestyle tweak suggested by Summers, involves focusing on the present moment to enhance brain health. By practicing mindfulness, individuals can improve their cognitive functions and overall well-being.

Summers also advocates for a balanced diet and social engagement as essential components of maintaining brain health. Consuming a variety of nutrient-rich foods and engaging in social activities contribute to overall cognitive well-being.

By incorporating these lifestyle tweaks into daily routines, individuals can take proactive steps to enhance brain health and memory, ultimately promoting a healthier and more fulfilling life.
