The nominations for the 2024 Drama League Awards, celebrating excellence in both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, were announced on April 22. The event took place at the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center, with Vanessa Williams and Bebe Neuwirth revealing the nominees. The winners will be unveiled at a ceremony scheduled for May 17 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom.
The Drama League Awards feature categories such as Outstanding Production of a Play, Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Production of a Musical, Outstanding Revival of a Musical, Outstanding Direction of a Play, Outstanding Direction of a Musical, and Distinguished Performance. Notably, actors can only receive the Distinguished Performance Award once in their career, making it a prestigious recognition.
Here We Are, the final Sondheim musical that premiered posthumously Off-Broadway at The Shed last year, was not considered for this year’s awards at the request of the production. Broadway productions like Appropriate and Mary Jane were categorized as revivals due to significant production differences from their Off-Broadway premieres, while The Prayer for the French Republic and Suffs were deemed transfers, making them eligible for the Outstanding Production categories.
Among the nominees for Outstanding Production of a Play are The Comeuppance, Flex, Grief Hotel, The Hunt, Jaja’s African Hair Braiding, Mother Play, Oh, Mary!, Patriots, Prayer for the French Republic, Stereophonic, and Wet Brain. In the Outstanding Production of a Musical category, nominees include Buena Vista Social Club, Dead Outlaw, Harmony, The Heart of Rock and Roll, Hell’s Kitchen, Illinoise, Lempicka, The Notebook, The Outsiders, Suffs, Teeth, and Water for Elephants.
